Learning English here in China can be very expensive. Knowing English is considered a big advantage when it comes to career and employment choices. Middle and upper class families spend a lot of money on language lessons in an attempt to raise bilingual children.
What happens then is, those kids that come from financially disadvantaged families do not get access to extracurricular opportunities such as learning English. In an attempt to give a boost to kids from such backgrounds, Epoch has started a new volunteer opportunity where its employees meet with groups of students once a week and teach English.
The company sponsored this initiative in collaboration with the Women and Children Center here in Dalian. The feedback from the parents and the children has been very positive and employees. Epoch is hoping this effort will expand as the number students grows.
